Toyota execs tell dealers 19 new models on way, including next Avalon

LAS VEGAS — Toyota executives told dealers at a convention Monday there are 19 new models coming in 2012, including a new more fuel-efficient Toyota Avalon due in November, according to a dealer in attendance.

Dealers attending the annual National Automobile Dealers Association convention were shown a picture of the new Avalon that will be shown in April at the New York auto show.

Toyota executives said the new Avalon full-size sedan will have fuel economy as good as, or better, than a Fiat 500, which gets a combined 33 m.p.g. in city and highway driving with a five-speed manual transmission.

Dealers also saw a concept fuel cell vehicle that is about a decade from production.

Bob Carter, general manager of Toyota Motor Sales USA, said 40% of the brand’s volume will be from new products this year compared with 7% last year.

Carter said he thinks forecasts of 13.6 million in U.S. sales are low and actual sales could easily be closer to 13.8 million.

Toyota production is back to normal levels after much of last year was constrained by shortages because of natural disasters in Japan and Thailand. Carter said he expects Toyota, Lexus and Scion sales to continue to recover through 2012.

Toyota is still short on some models. One is the Tacoma pickup. Toyota also is changing the mix of Camry sedans with unexpectedly high demand for the sport SE trim level.

Toyota thought the SE would account for about 8% of Camry sales but demand is at 40% so the mix is being changed at the Georgetown, Ky., factory.
