Stapp Inspires Spotlight Organization- I Have A Dream Foundation-Boulder County

Hello and welcome! We are excited to take a closer look at our Stapp Inspires Organization—the “I Have A Dream” Foundation of Boulder County. Each year we spotlight 5 or 6 different organizations that are making a difference in our community. We are proud to partner with each one and hope you will check back often as we highlight these inspiring organizations.

The “I Have A Dream” Foundation of Boulder County was founded in 1990 and follows the national “I Have A Dream” model, which was established in New York in 1981 by philanthropist Eugene Lang. The Boulder County affiliate was launched in 1990 when area philanthropists discovered the then-dismal 35% graduation rate for youth from low-income areas and wanted to make a change in their community. Since 1990, the Foundation has served over 1,100 students (called “Dreamer Scholars”) and 4,000 community members. They have graduated 10 Dreamer Scholar classes and are currently serving nearly 700 students throughout Boulder County and Weld County. 90% of Dream Scholars graduate from high school and 85% enroll in post secondary education, at rates twice that of their peers.

The mission of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation is to empower children from low-income communities in Boulder County to succeed in school, college, and career by providing academic, social and emotional support from elementary through college as well as post-secondary tuition assistance. The organization’s multi-faceted approach includes: creating support networks, providing mentors, teaching social and emotional life skills, ensuring career readiness, and supporting academic success through tutoring and workshops. The Foundation provides students with 39 weeks of in-school, after-school, and summer programming for 12+ years, and also serves parents through home visits and parent workshops.

In 2020, “I Have A Dream”  is celebrating its 30th Anniversary, with a focus on how the Foundation has impacted students and families in St Vrain Valley School District and Boulder Valley School District.  “I Have A Dream” starts early, supportingstudents in first grade and working with them to and through high school graduation, and on to a successful career or post-secondary education.

Dreamer Scholars have access to a wide range of community support and opportunities that help to close the opportunity gap in Boulder County, thus helping to level the playing field for children who might not have access to the same resources as their more affluent peers.

The success of the last 30 years would not have been possible without community support. From the staff who day-in and day-out give their all to these students, to the 700volunteers who help out with programming or serve as mentors, and hundreds of donors, “ I Have A Dream” has been able to positively impact the lives of not only Dreamer Scholars, but Boulder County and Weld County at large. We can’t wait to see what the next 30 years will bring and the stories the “I Have A Dream” Foundation of Boulder County will share.
